Libertas no EU-critical Alternative

Republican Sinn Féin warns of deception of electorates at this years EU election

Vienna/Dublin – The announcement of the party Libertas to campaign in this year’s EU-elections with an own list in Austria causes rejection of Republican Sinn Féin in Austria.

A representative of Republican Sinn Féin in Austria stated that Libertas is “no EU-critical alternative; not for the Irish nor for the Austrian people”. Libertas would be controlled by multimillionaire Declan Ganley, who was an eager supporter of the conservative government party Fianna Fail.

Libertas was founded as a name for his campaign against the Lisbon treaty. But except the denial of the Lisbon treaty, Libertas has the same neo-liberal ideology of economy which led to the current financial crisis.

The interests Libertas has in Ireland is to obtain the low taxes for the multinational trusts at the expense of the working people.

„However in the various polls conducted into the reasons people had for voting no, the issue of corporation tax was cited by only a minority. The issue of neutrality, erosion of national identity and democracy along with issues such as trade union rights, were among the main reasons given for voting no. Despite the fact the arguments put forward by Libertas had only a peripheral influence on the outcome of the referendum the establishment and the mainstream media chose portray them as leading the opposition to Lisbon”, said Des Dalton, Vice President of Republican Sinn Féin.

Furthermore, a representative of Republican Sinn Féin in Austria added: “The most important thing accomplished by Libertas was the positioning of the progressive No-campaign in Ireland in a conservative place. The citizens of Austria and the whole EU must not be bluffed by the rhetoric of Libertas. Multimillionaire Ganley has no real democratic alternative for them.”
